Children born with a cleft lip and palate suffer from a congenital deformity that can severely impact their ability to eat, speak, hear or even breathe. Clefts create terrible stigmas and cause emotional distress and other developmental problems, interfering with learning and social interactions. Dr. Alicia Sigler has been committed to helping these children and their families regain their lives since doing her residency training when she saw the large number of patients needing treatment from across Mexico. For the past twenty years, Dr. Sigler has worked with organizations on both sides of the border and donated countless hours and nearly two thousand no-cost surgeries to making it possible for her patients to adapt to society, interact with their peers, attend school, find good jobs and ultimately have their own families.
As director of the multidisciplinary team working with cleft palate patients at the Shriners organization in Tijuana and a volunteer surgeon at the Government Health Center in Ensenada, Dr. Sigler is part of a skilled network of health professionals who make up a comprehensive cleft management team addressing hundreds of cases each year and making a positive impact that is felt lifelong throughout families and society.
On the U.S. side, Dr. Sigler is the vice president of ConnectMed International, a non-profit organization founded in 2010 by Dr. Amanda Gosman, chief of the plastic surgery division and director of craniofacial surgery at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego and UC San Diego Medical School. Seeing her results, the positive effects her surgeries have on the patient and the families, she says "All of this makes the long training in plastic and reconstructive surgery worthwhile."
In an interview with the Union Tribune, Dr. Sigler shares what her surgical efforts have done for her personally. "It has made me grow as a person, to become more humble..... to perform my work the best way possible and to appreciate the endless list of good things happening in my life."
